Late: A Love Story
On Saturday afternoon, March 29, forty people representing a variety of community organizations and faith traditions gathered at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn for a performance of "LATE: A Love Story", a one-woman performance by Rachelle Zola. Hosted by Pizza and Social Justice, in partnership with the BRIDGE* Alliance, OneCommunity, Peoples Community Church and Sacred Ground of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, we heard the story of Rachelle Zola—a 76-year-old white woman who has come late in life to a deeper understanding of the nature and impacts of racism in U.S. society. Not one to sit idly by when confronted by the truth of racial injustice around her, in recent years Rachelle staged a 40-day hunger strike to draw attention to the issue of reparations for slavery and Jim Crow discrimination and made a 825-mile walking pilgrimage from Chicago to Montgomery AL to raise awareness of the issue and its attendant problems (e.g., housing discrimination, the generational wealth gap, mass incarceration, etc.) in America today.
This one-woman performance is deeply moving. It exposes not only the impacts on Rachelle of what she has learned, but also the impacts on other people, including many descendants of chattel slavery, she has
met on her journeys. And it gives everyone who attends the opportunity to share their hearts in a safe space, so that we can all learn from each other.
The Universal House of Justice has encouraged us time and again to engage in social discourse with people from like-minded organizations, and this was an example of just such an opportunity! More presentations of “LATE: A Love Story” are being scheduled in the area in the future. I strongly encourage everyone who has an opportunity to hear Rachelle seizes the opportunity to participate.
