Northern Illinois Bahá'ís

Report: New Jim Crow Reflection Meeting for South Suburbs

Location

Northern Illinois USA South Holland, IL

Bahá'í principles of justice and independent investigation of truth laid a foundation for the February 17 gathering in South Holland of a four-hour presentation on Michelle Alexander's book "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness."

Thirteen Bahá'ís and one guest attended this forum which lends itself well to Bahá'í interests in community outreach and social and economic development. Charles Young, an experienced workshop facilitator, skillfully integrated segments of Alexander's video with group sharing of personal thoughts and experiences. Discussions were both moving and profound. This subject may well be an introduction into a new civil rights movement in this country.

These meetings, which are being held throughout northern Illinois, give Bahá'ís an opportunity to become aware of the practices and implications involved in this issue, and a forum for reaching out to others who are also interested in the topic. Everyone is encouraged to attend one of these presentations -- the experience is profound!
